“Probiotics” … seems like we see and hear the word everywhere these days. But not everyone understands what probiotics are. Dr. Douglas Haghighi, a gastroenterologist and dentist, and creator of Gutsy Products, explains.
“When it comes to bacteria, probiotics are good guys”, says Dr. Doug. “The digestive tract is host to vast numbers of bacteria which work together and are necessary to maintain good health.” In other words, probiotics are “good bacteria” that benefit humans, especially those who experience such disease states as diarrhea and inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease/ulcerative colitis).
That being said, it’s worth noting that all that good buzz about probiotics has yet to be proven in clinical studies. According to Dr. Doug, “the jury is still out on the benefit of probiotics in the general population. More large-scale studies are needed to determine if there is an actual benefit.”
The good news is—probiotics are typically mixed with yogurt which by itself can be part of a balanced diet. Enjoy!
